Bed Bug Extermination in Cambridge
Bed bugs have nothing to do with how clean a home is and everything to do with where people and furniture have been. The job is a plan with follow-up, not a spray.
Bed bug calls in Cambridge come from a few kinds of places. Apartments above the storefronts and in the older walk-ups in downtown Galt, and the smaller apartment buildings in Preston and Hespeler, where one unit gets treated and the unit beside it does not. Rooming houses and shared rentals. Hotels and motels near the 401, where a guest brings them in and the next guest takes them home. And family homes in the Franklin Boulevard or north Hespeler subdivisions where they arrived in a suitcase after a trip and nobody believed it for two months. All of them are treatable. None of them is treatable with a can from the hardware store, and spraying first makes the job longer.
Confirming it is bed bugs
The first visit is an inspection and it is not skipped. Bites alone do not confirm bed bugs; people react differently and some not at all. The technician looks at the mattress seams and tags, the underside of the box spring, the bed frame joints, the headboard, the baseboards behind the bed, outlet and switch plates, picture frames, the seams of the couch and the chair someone sits in every evening. What confirms it is live insects, shed skins, eggs and the dark spotting they leave. If it is not bed bugs — carpet beetles and bat bugs get mistaken for them, and bat bugs in a Galt century home with a chimney point to a different problem — you are told, and the plan changes.
Apartments: one unit is never the whole story
In a multi-unit building bed bugs move through wall voids, along plumbing and electrical chases and under doors. In the older buildings downtown, the walls between units are often lath and plaster with open cavities behind them, and the apartments above the shops share a stairwell and a wall. Treating one unit in isolation pushes the insects into the adjoining units and they come back. The written plan for a building includes inspecting the units on either side, above and below, and treating the ones that show activity. Landlords and property managers get that in writing, and the Landlord and Tenant Board is the official source on who is responsible for what in a rental.
Preparation
Treatment fails when the unit is not prepared, so the preparation list comes in writing before the treatment date. It usually means bagging and washing bedding and clothing on hot and drying on high, pulling the bed away from the wall, emptying the closet floor and under-bed storage, and reducing clutter so the technician can reach the baseboards. It does not mean throwing out the mattress; an encasement after treatment is usually the better answer, and dragging an infested mattress down a shared stairwell spreads the problem to the next tenant.
Residual treatment or heat
Two approaches are used, and the building decides which. A residual insecticide treatment, applied by a licensed technician to cracks, seams, frames and baseboards, keeps working after it dries and is usually done in two or three visits spaced to catch the eggs as they hatch. It suits most apartments and houses and is the lower-cost option. A heat treatment raises the whole unit to a temperature bed bugs and their eggs cannot survive and holds it there for hours, monitored with sensors. It is one long day, it reaches inside furniture and clutter that sprays cannot, and it costs more. It is often the right answer for a heavily infested unit, a household that cannot do extensive preparation, a hotel room that has to be back in service quickly, or where someone in the home should not be around residual products. Some jobs use both. The plan says which and why.
Follow-up is part of the job
Bed bug eggs hatch over a couple of weeks and a single treatment rarely gets every one. The follow-up visit is scheduled when the plan is written. At the follow-up the technician re-inspects, treats any activity and tells you plainly whether the unit is clear or needs another round. Monitors under the bed legs are often left in place so you can see for yourself.
Hotels, motels and short-term rentals
Cambridge's hotels near the 401 and its short-term rentals turn rooms over daily, and a bed bug report is a reputation problem as much as a pest problem. For these properties the approach is fast inspection, heat where the room has to be back in service, treatment of the adjoining rooms, and a standing arrangement so housekeeping knows what to look for and a report gets inspected within a day. Documentation of each inspection and treatment is provided.
What is applied, and your safety
Only products registered in Canada for bed bug control are used, at the label rate, in the places the label allows. The technician holds the applicable Ontario exterminator licence and can show it. You are told how long to stay out of the treated rooms, and anyone pregnant, with an infant, with breathing problems or with pets should say so before the visit. The Ontario government's pesticides page covers the licensing and rules that apply.
Frequently asked questions
How did bed bugs get into my house?
Travel, a hotel, a guest's luggage, a second-hand couch or mattress, a child's backpack from a sleepover, a visit to a building that had them. They hitchhike. It is not a cleanliness problem, and a clean house in north Hespeler gets them the same way an apartment in Galt does. The inspection confirms it and the plan deals with it.
Should I throw out my mattress and furniture?
Usually not. A treated mattress in a proper encasement is fine, and carrying an infested mattress down a shared stairwell spreads the problem to the hallway and the next unit. If something genuinely has to go, it gets bagged and marked so nobody takes it off the curb.
How many visits does bed bug treatment take?
A residual treatment is usually two or three visits spaced to catch hatching eggs. A heat treatment is one long day with a follow-up inspection. In an apartment building the neighbouring units are inspected and treated where active, or the problem comes back. The plan states the number of visits before you agree to it.
